Chicago Headline Club's Les Brownlee Summer Social on Judson - August 10

Friends, neighbors, journalists and students are invited to again celebrate the life of pioneering Chicago journalist Les Brownlee*.

Sunday, August 10, 2-8 p.m.

at

the home of Les and his widow, Priscilla Ruth MacDougall

537 Judson, Evanston

He worked at the Chicago Daily News, Chicago’s American, Chicago Defender, WLS-TV (“Les Brownlee: Channel 7 Eyewitness News”), and taught at Columbia College. If you were one of his students, he might have asked you to stand in class and shout, “I am great.”

Les was the first African-American member of the Society of Professional Journalist, the first black president of the Chicago Headline Club.

The Chicago Headline Club annually honors Les each year with a $3,000 scholarship to an outstanding Chicago area journalism student. This year’s recipient is Lauren Di Vito of Loyola University.

This party is both friend and fund-raiser. The suggested donation is $20 for all you can eat, drink and be merry while enjoying to remarkable Harriet Ellis on keyboard and Brian Gills on guitar.

Frances Willard called Evanston "a paradise for women." Really.

 Kris Hartzell will discuss why Ms. Willard might have thought of Evanston as a paradise for women during a walking tour starting at at Willard House and continue to Northwestern University and residential Evanston this Saturday, June 14, 2014. 

Ms. Hartzell is an architectural historian, Frances Willard Historical Association board president and co-author of Evanston: 150 Years, 150 Places with her Design Evanston cohorts.

Eat Pizza and Do Good: Fill up at Evanston Rotary's PIZZA FEST on May 13

Pizza lovers from near and far are invited to the Evanston Rotary's annual Pizza Fest.

Come eat pizza for Evanston kids! 

When: Tuesday, May 13 from 4:30-8:30 p.m.


Where: Giordano's of Evanston, 1527 Chicago Av., Evanston 

Cost: $20/adult and $15/child at the door, but you can get your tickets for less if you go online.


The menu includes all the cheese, veggie, and cheese and sausage thin crust pizza you can eat, plus soft drinks. Beer and wine will cost extra.


Celebrities and Rotarians will be serving up the pizza and drinks. Evanston's own, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky and broadcaster Art Norman have signed on, as well as some generous NU coaches. Stay tuned for more details.


Pizza Fest is just one of the ways Evanston Rotary and its charitable fund raise money to support youth-focused projects and non-profits in Evanston. 

This year's beneficiaries include Y.O.U. of Evanston, Childcare Network of Evanston, Evanston Day Nursery, Infant Welfare Society of Evanston and Evanston's Youth Job Center.

I think I'm okay in the way I conduct myself with clients and potential clients, but I know I can do better. When you're "swinging for the fences", like I am these days, who couldn't stand to double back and reconsider how they present themselves in public. 

That's why I think getting to know Catherine Johns, buying her book, learning from her, going to her events and doing everything short of stalking her is worthwhile.

Catherine will be signing her book, Show Up and Shine, and discussing practical, concrete ways, how to use your body and your voice to create a correct impression at Heaven Meets Earth studio in Evanston next Thursday night, October 24.
